The Raja Empat Islands may have more different species of fish than any other place in the world. The Gobiidae family (Gobies) is the best represented of all - the TNC Rapid Environmental Assessment (REA) survey in 2002 found over 137 different species of gobies alone.
Marine Fishes of Southeast Asia (1997), by Dr. Gerald Allen (who also wrote the.coral reef fish chapter in the TNC Raja Empat REA) lists only 63 different goby species for the entire southeast Asian region, so I suppose it isn't so surpsing that I had trouble ID-ing some gobies I saw.
