I have never seen Big-eyes with this coloration of horizontal red bars. This may be a developmental stage - these may be sub-adults in transition from juvenile to adult coloration patterns. We saw numerous fish with identical patterns on several dives.
This shot shows the effect of using the 17-35 lens, which makes it possible to pull the image of these fish in closer than would have been possible with the wider 12-24 lens.
