Voting booths

Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia

Fuji S2 digital, Nikon 12-24

These are the voting booths, simple u-shaped aluminum frames. The white things are pieces of styrofoam. There is a nail on the end of the string, visible in the booth on the right.

The voters use the nail to punch through the ballot on the picture of the candidate of their choice.

The first round of the presidential election, with five candidates, was nearly a disaster, as many voters failed to unfold the ballots fully before punching, resulting in double punches. The KPU had to issue a decree on the afternoon of the election providing for recounts of invalid ballots with double punches provided the intent of the voter was clear. The second round, with only two candidates - Megawati and SBY - went much more smoothly.
