Downtown Bima

Sumbawa, Indonesia

Fuji S2 digital, Nikon 12-24

Central Sumbawa is dominated by a huge volcano, Mt. Tambora, whose eruption in 1815 was the biggest in recorded history, surpassing Krakatoa. The ejecta filled the world's atmosphere for a year, causing an endless winter in Europe.

Another volcano, Mt. Api, is located on Sangeang Island just off the northeast corner of Sumbawa.

Live-aboard dive boats heading for Komodo from Bali pass Sumbawa to the north. I had dived at Moyo Is. and on Sangeang Is. on several occasions, riding dive boats to and from Komodo, but I'd never been inland or seen Bima, the capital of eastern Sumbawa. Well, here it is.
