Halmahera

North Maluku, Indonesia

Fuji S2 digital, Nikon 12-24

Halmahera is shaped like a spider, with four large peninsulas extending in different directions. To get to Tobelo, my vehicle had to cross this part of the island from the Ternate side on the west (the Molucca Sea) to Kao Bay, which opens onto the Halmahera Sea.

At the end of World War II, Halmahera had an estimated population of only 50,000. It's still very unpopulated in comparison with almost anywhere else in Indonesia. The interior is mostly forests and jungle.
