Dave looks pensive walking through the water on the edge of the beach. In fact, he is trying to get a signal on his cell-phone so that we can make our scheduled call to the Carter Center office in Jakarta to reassure them that we haven't yet been killed or kidnapped by fundamentalist fanatics, or whatever.

I never felt threatened at any time during these trips (or at any other time) in Indonesia, but in view of the realities, the Carter Center's deployment policies - using two-person teams in most locations, and daily call-in's to make sure everyone was all right, - were necessary, sensible, and well organized.
