On this trip, I was accompanying Dave McRae, a bright young Australian who is writing his Ph.D. thesis on ethnic and religous conflicts.

Dave has excellent Indonesian, and I don't, so our meetings generally consisted of Dave interviewing with me following as best I could, or failing that, triyng to maintain the appearance of attentiveness, not always successfully.

I learned an immense amount about Indonesia travelling in Malukiu with Dave. .
