Halmahera and Tidore (viewed from Ternate)

North Maluku, Indonesia

Fuji S2 digital, Nikon 12-24

Following Banda Aceh in northern Sumatra, the rajah of Ternate was one of the first rulers in the area that makes up modern Indonesia to convert to Islam, probably in the 1490s, and the leader of Tidore followed soon after.

Ternate is intensely Islamic (as I found out when I insensitively tried to order a beer with dinner one night), but it's a different, older flavour of Islam than in other parts of modern Indonesia.
